As I’ve mentioned before, I am working on a new book The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact Without Burnout with my co-author Beth Kanter. As of the first of the year, we are hosting January’s Nonprofit Blog Carnival.
Like every new year, we often take the time to re-evaluate what we’ve done in the previous year and set up some goals for ourselves – resolutions and other promises to change our habits for the better. Wherever we work, we’re faced with challenges including how to keep a healthy separation between work life and home life. Many of us don’t succeed, and we look to the new year as a chance to wipe the slate clean and try again.
If you are working in the nonprofit sector, you may be experiencing some of the same things as those within for-profit companies, but you probably face a lot of challenges that are particular to mission-driven, social change organizations. Having run a nonprofit before as well as consulting nonprofit organizations for over 25 years, I’ve seen first hand how limited resources, intense work situations and deeply entrenched scarcity mindsets can sap our energy and lead us down the path of burnout.
But there are those who keep going, who have an awareness of the limitations and find ways to replenish themselves, their team, and their organization for more sustainable impact.
What self-care techniques, rituals, or habits do you personally live and breath everyday that keep you inspired, calm, and effective?
If you work at or with a nonprofit, what are some of the unique ways that the organization’s culture not only supports self-care by individuals, but is part of the collective mindset?
Here are some topics pertaining to this month’s theme. Remember, we want your personal take or observation of how nonprofits are tackling any of these things:
- Habit change – establishing good habits and dropping bad ones
- Work/Life Balance
- Getting more sleep
- Managing stress
- Healthy eating – especially at work
- Incorporating movement into your work, like walking meetings or standing desks. Maybe your organization does a regular walking meet for staff?
- Mindfulness activities like meditation, journaling, adult coloring, walking meditation
- Play and creativity, for yourself or in the workplace
- Setting boundaries, learning to say no, work hours
- Managing your workload
- Taking time off
- Healthier relationships with your technology, disconnecting
- Managing your time and energy
- Overcoming procrastination
- Does your nonprofit integrate wellness into other programs, like leadership training, discussing it at staff meetings, or other?
- How your nonprofit wellness program takes a broader view beyond just physical health to incorporate aspects of wellness?
How To Submit
- Write a blog post, or even choose a recent post that fits the theme.
- Submit your post via email to: email@example.com.
- Be sure to include your name, your blog’s name and the URL of the post (not your blog homepage).
- Get your post in by the end of the day on Friday, January 22th and check back on Monday, January 25th to see if we’ve included your post in the January blog carnival.
What is a Nonprofit Blog Carnival?
I have to say that I’m new to the world of blog carnivals so I’ve taken this excerpt from Beth Kanter’s blog post about it:
The Nonprofit Blog Carnival a monthly round-up of blog posts on topics for and by people at nonprofits. Each month, the host creates a theme and sends out the call for posts (in a post like this) on that topic. Then the host (that’s us!) collects the best ones in a round-up post towards the end of the month.
You can write a post for your own website or blog. It doesn’t have to be specifically for the Carnival, or even mention the Carnival.
